thrilling action. Below is a look at players who have lit up the tournament through the second round of the group stage.

International focus

Vanina Correa

England dominated their Argentine counterparts in a Group D clash in Le Havre last Friday, creating chance after chance, only to be denied by the excellence of goalkeeper Vanina Correa. She came up with several world-class saves and was helpless to prevent Jodie Taylor’s winner just after the hour mark.

Cristiana Girelli

The Italian striker showed off her full range of skills in her side’s 5-0 win over Jamaica in Reims last Friday, scoring a first-half hat-trick in which her three goals arrived in a span of just 34 minutes. She will be hoping to continue her form as the tournament progresses into the knockout phase.

Valerie Gauvin

The French forward put in an outstanding performance to see the host team secure a hard-fought 2-1 win over Norway in Nice last Wednesday. Gauvin scored the opening goals as Les Bleus claimed all three points and secured progression into the round of 16.

African focus

Asishat Oshoala

The Player of the Match for Nigeria’s 2-0 win over The Korea Republic in Grenoble last Wednesday, Asishat Oshoala scored the Super Falcons’ second – adding to an own goal from Kim Do-yeon – as the African side boosted their hopes of qualification for the round of 16.

Janine van Wyk

South Africa, on their tournament debut, once again put in a brave showing against a much higher ranked team in their 1-0 loss to China in Paris last Thursday. Banyana Banyana’s excellent defence owed much to a fine performance from the captain and centre-back Janine van Wyk, whose dedication was an inspiration to her teammates.

Gabrielle Onguene

Cameroon suffered a second loss in Group E when they succumbed 3-1 at the hands of the Netherlands in Valenciennes. However, the Indomitable Lionesses at least scored their first goal of the tournament through Gabrielle Onguene, who will hope to be on target again when they face New Zealand on Thursday.
