Football fans are in for an eventful weekend with 20/21  Serie A and  La Liga matches airing from 19th – 22nd February 2021.

The headline fixture from Serie A this weekend sees Milan and Internazionale meet in the Derby della Madonnina (Milan derby) on the afternoon of Sunday 21 February at 3pm on SuperSport Football (DStv Channel 205) and SuperSport GOtv Select 1 (GOtv Channel 33). Not only is this clash about bragging rights in one of Italy’s biggest cities, it will also be key to deciding the Scudetto – with the teams in a pitched battle to try and prevent Juventus claiming a 10th straight title.

There’s usually no shortage of ‘edge’ in this match, but there will be even more this time around after their last meeting – a 2-1 win for Inter in the Coppa Italia in late January – featured a verbal bust-up between star strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku.

Milan manager Stefano Pioli has urged ‘Ibra’ to continue to defy his age, with the 39-year-old recently scoring his 500th career club goal: “Zlatan is happy with us and I think the best thing about this team is that the players are happy. We are with a huge club, everyone wants to do well and I think it’s right that he continues playing, and that he does it with us.

Should the Milan giants draw and take points off each other, the team hoping to capitalise will of course be Juventus, who complete the round with a Monday night clash at home to Crotone at 8:45pm on SuperSport Football and SuperSport GOtv Select 1. Juve goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny says the team has “found more of a balance, are allowing fewer scoring opportunities to our opponents in recent weeks and need to continue like this. At the same time, we must also be aware that we’ve got to keep improving.”

The round also features a potential thriller between Atalanta and Napoli on Sunday evening at 6pm on SuperSport Football, SuperSport GOtv Football and SuperSport GOtv Select 1, with the latter team looking to complete a league ‘double’ over La Dea after an emphatic 4-1 triumph in Naples back in October 2020. Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has admitted that his team is struggling with the relentless schedule: “We are always using the same defenders and that can lead to fatigue in some areas of the team.”

Top picks from the legendary La Liga, sees log leaders Atletico Madrid host Levante at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano late on the afternoon of Saturday 20 February at 4:15pm on SuperSport La Liga (DStv Channel 204), SuperSport GOtv Football (GOtv Channel 31) and SuperSport GOtv La Liga (GOtv Channel 32).

Atletico are perfectly placed to go on and win their first La Liga title since 2013-14, taking full advantage of the weaknesses and inconsistencies of rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona. Manager Diego Simeone has urged his team to “continue to go game by game”.

Atletico can also take comfort from the fact that they have not lost to Levante since a 2-1 reverse in May 2016, with the teams’ last meeting in June 2020 decided by an own goal from Levante’s Bruno Gonzalez Cabrera.

Elsewhere in Spain’s top flight, champions Real Madrid will travel to Estadio Municipal Jose Zorrilla to face Real Valladolid on Saturday night at 9pm on SuperSport La Liga and SuperSport GOtv La Liga. The Pucelanos have not beaten Los Blancos since way back in 2008, but Real’s unsteady campaign makes them ripe for an upset defeat – even against a team struggling against the prospect of relegation.

Barcelona have also had their fair share of struggles this season, though Ronald Koeman’s men have improved since the turn of the year and will be confident of defeating Cadiz at the Camp Nou on Sunday afternoon at 2pm on SuperSport La Liga and SuperSport GOtv La Liga.

The Blaugrana will continue to miss exciting youngster Ansu Fati as he recovers from knee surgery, with Koeman urging patience: “Out of respect for the player, I am not the person to speak about his recovery,” said the Dutchman.
