Considering the sporadic rise in the rate of unemployment across the country, data from the National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) Labour Force Survey indicates that Nigeria’s unemployment rate was at 27.1 percent in the second quarter (Q2) of 2020. This appears to be four percentage points higher than the 23 percent reported in the third quarter (Q3) of 2018. It is hinged on this premise MTN Nigeria sought to salvage the economic situation by empowering retailers through its “Kiosk as a Service” (KaaS) scheme.

Now, you may be wondering what “Kiosk as a Service” scheme is all about. “Kiosk as a Service” scheme is a brainchild of MTN Nigeria, which is designed to empower at least 2,000 MTN retailers across the nation with solar-panel-installed kiosks in order to enable the seamless provision of MTN’s bouquet of products and service to end users more efficiently.

This is a crucial empowerment tool in that the provision of the kiosks helps to champion the usage of renewable energy, while also equipping the retailers with reliable power supply needed for their daily business operations. So, in case you are not still aware, the provision of these kiosks will enable each MTN retailer to provide customers with products and services such as sim registration, 4G migration, MoMo agent financial services, airtime sales, amongst many more offerings.

Through the “Kiosk as a Service” initiative, MTN Nigeria is actually providing a business cover for its retailers who may ordinarily be hawking or operating under umbrellas. This is a laudable idea as it will empower thousands of Nigerians to massively contribute to the country’s economy.
