The Nigerian Air Force has commended the exceptional courage and professionalism of its Alpha Jet pilots who safely ejected after their aircraft encountered an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection functional check flight on December 6, 2025, at Air Force Base Kainji.

The incident occurred shortly after take-off when the aircraft developed a sudden emergency. According to the Air Force, the pilots responded with remarkable calm and precision, steering the jet away from populated areas before carrying out a controlled ejection. Both airmen were immediately taken in for routine medical evaluation.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, praised the pilots for their discipline, quick thinking and sound judgement, noting that their actions averted what could have been a far more tragic situation. He has ordered the immediate establishment of a Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the incident.

The Air Force also acknowledged the swift and coordinated response of its personnel, including Search and Rescue teams, Fire and Crash Response units and medical staff who moved promptly to secure the area and ensure the safety of the crew. Their efficiency and teamwork, the service said, reflect the unwavering dedication that underpins daily operations across its units.

The incident highlights the inherent risks associated with aviation operations, especially in military environments where rigorous flying schedules, complex missions and continuous readiness are part of daily routines. The Air Force noted that its personnel routinely confront these risks with courage and duty-driven commitment in the effort to keep the nation secure.

Reassuring Nigerians, the Air Force reiterated its adherence to stringent safety procedures and its commitment to protecting both its personnel and the wider public in line with its constitutional responsibilities.
