Dare Awonugba, the successor of Ambrose Somide as the Director of Radio Services at Daar Communications, has started getting into the groove of his new duties.

Somide, an influential player in the broadcast world, left Daar Communications in a hail of praise on October 31, 2024, after 30 years.

Radio stations Raypower and Faaji FM were directly under his management as the Director of Radio Services.

He left Daar Communications to take charge of his new radio station, Smailz 98.7 FM, while Awonugba was named as his replacement.

The successor began his tenure on a shaky note with a cost-cutting move that saw operating hours reduced.

“The station opening hours were moved forward to 5:30 am, and shutdown was pegged at 9–9:15 pm when he first took charge. This effectively locked out all the night and early morning programmes in the first days of Awonugba,” sources confirmed.

But after Awonugba got a better handle on things, a review was done, and the situation has been reversed.

The radio stations have now resumed their late-hour transmissions, observers disclosed.

New programmes have also been added as the new boss takes surer steps to build on Somide’s legacy, which made the radio stations formidable, particularly Faaji FM 106.5 with its strong grassroots following.

“But there is a very noticeable difference; the rules appear to have been a bit relaxed since Awonugba came on board, especially as it regards manners on air,” a keen listener state
