8 Things To Expect As National Sports Festival Gets Underway In Ogun State
Gateway State is buzzing with excitement
The 22nd National Sports Festival dubbed “Gateway Games” has officially begun in Ogun State, with over 10,000 athletes from across Nigeria arriving to compete in more than 30 sporting events.
The Gateway State is buzzing with excitement as it hosts the festival for the first time in nearly two decades, with the main activities centered in Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, and Sagamu.
The state hosted the games for the first time – the 15th edition of the National Sports Festival- in 2006.
The state capital, Abeokuta, is already witnessing increased traffic and vibrant crowds as the opening ceremony holds at the MKO Abiola International Stadium. Attendees can expect a cultural showcase featuring traditional Egungun dancers, contemporary music performances, and appearances by top Nigerian artists and dignitaries, including the Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh.

Competitions are set to be intense, especially in athletics, wrestling, and football—events where states like Delta, Edo, and Bayelsa traditionally dominate. Young rising stars are eager to challenge records and earn spots in national teams ahead of upcoming international competitions like the African Games and the Olympics.
To ensure safety, the Ogun State government has deployed over 2,000 security personnel across all venues, working in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, Civil Defence Corps, and private security outfits. Emergency services and medical teams are also on standby.

Beyond the games, the festival is an economic lifeline for local businesses. Hotels in host cities are fully booked, street vendors are making brisk sales, and transport services are running at full capacity. The Ogun State government has also set up tourism booths to guide visitors to landmarks like Olumo Rock and the Adire Market.
Digital innovation is playing a key role this year. The official Ogun NSF 2024 mobile app provides schedules, live results, and venue maps, making it easier for fans and participants to navigate the festival.

Looking ahead, the closing ceremony—slated for May 30—will wrap up the event in grand style, with performances from popular entertainers, fireworks, and the symbolic handover to the next host state.
In all, this year’s National Sports Festival is shaping up to be a celebration of youth, talent, and unity—putting Ogun State proudly on the national stage.
