Why Sanwo-Olu Is Yet To Get Over Deputy Chief Of Staff, Soyannwo’s Demise
is still hurting
The Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Sanwo-Olu is still hurting.
“The Governor is yet to get over the death of his deputy chief of staff” according to those in the know.
Sanwo-Olu announced the death of Deputy Chief of Staff, Gboyega Soyannwo on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, after a brief illness at the age of 55 in a very telling social media post that shows the rapport they enjoyed.
Insiders, however, claim the Governor’s social media post that described the late Deputy Chief of Staff as “a brother to me, an armour-bearer, a confidante and a faithful believer in our collective dream of a Greater Lagos” did not do justice to the connection they had.
“They were extraordinarily close, tight friends before the government house. Soyannwo was the go-to person for everything Sanwo-Olu and was that person you see, and just seeing him tells you this is important or personal to the Governor” information here and there revealed.

Sanwo-Olu was first elected Governor of Lagos state in 2019 and re-elected for a second term in 2023.
The commissioner for environment, Tokunbo Wahab’s label of “a refined gentleman” themes reactions of great loss from all corners about the demise of Soyannwo.
Added information has it that Sanwo-Olu and Soyannwo’s rapport was so thick that he would have been the Chief of Staff if not for better political standing – and network in the corridor of power – that placed Tayo Ayinde on a better pedestal for the job.
Sanwo-Olu wrote ” I am devastated by Gboyega’s sudden departure and I’m deeply affected by this news “in announcing the sad affair, those who should validate the words but, insist the “effect runs really deep because Soyannwo was a very good, very exemplary in character and deeds and contributed in no small measure to make the Governor’s job”.
Before his death, the Deputy Chief of Staff and the Governor reportedly perfected so much of a synergy that Soyannwo was dubbed Sanwo-Olu’s “mind reader” for his knack for knowing and getting done what the latter wants without being asked.
