Veteran Nigerian Juju and Highlife musician, Saint Janet, popularly known as “Mama Yabis,” has died after a brief illness.
The singer, born Iyun Janet Oluwatoyosi Ajilore, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, bringing an end to a career that made her one of the most talked-about figures in Nigeria’s Juju music scene.
Saint Janet rose to prominence with her Faaji Plus album, which attracted widespread attention and controversy over its adult-themed Yoruba lyrics.
Although the album faced bans from some regulatory authorities, it gained a loyal following and cemented her reputation as a fearless entertainer.
A former Cherubim and Seraphim chorister, she carved a unique niche by blending gospel praise with Juju and Highlife rhythms, often delivering sharp social commentary and provocative lyrics. She maintained that her music was intended for mature audiences and frequently spoke against what she described as the double standards faced by female performers.
Known for her energetic stage performances, Saint Janet entertained audiences across Nigeria and among the diaspora, including performances in the United Kingdom. She also became widely known by the self-styled title of leader of the “St. Bottles Cathedral.”
