Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran actor, dramatist and scholar, Dr. Kola Oyewo, describing his passing as a huge loss to the world of theatre and African storytelling.

In a condolence message on Sunday, Atiku said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of the renowned thespian, whose contributions to drama and education left an enduring legacy.

The former vice president paid tribute to Oyewo’s iconic portrayal of King Lapite in the acclaimed movie Saworoide, noting that the role immortalised the late actor’s immense talent and dedication to the arts.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Kola Oyewo, a legendary thespian and scholar of African drama,” Atiku wrote.

He added: “His iconic role as King Lapite in the timeless Saworoide immortalised his immense talent and teachings.”

Atiku lamented that the death of the veteran actor had created a significant vacuum in the theatre community, saying, “A great void has been left in Theatre Arts.”

According to him, Oyewo’s influence extended beyond the stage and classroom, touching lovers of African stories across the world through his works and commitment to preserving African culture.

“He will be sorely missed by lovers of African stories worldwide,” Atiku stated.

The former vice president also extended his condolences to the family, friends, students and admirers of the late dramatist, describing him as “an exceptional dramatist and teacher of social conscience.”

“I join his family and fans in mourning this exceptional dramatist and teacher of social conscience. May his soul rest in peace,” he mourned.
