The festival is usually staged to honor a departed king, nobleman, or as tradition demands.
Being a member of any of the five Eyo groups is a thing of pride for Lagosians of all classes.
Lagosians in this case are defined as indigene by birth or ancestry.
The five Eyo groups – according to their seniority – are Adimu (identified by a black, broad-rimmed hat), Laba (Red), Oniko (Yellow), Ologede (Green), and Agere (Purple).

The legendary musician is a member of the leader group – Adimu.
The” King of New Generation Fuji Musicians” Sulaimon Alao Adekunle known by the stage name Malaika is part of the Oniko while “King of Song”, Saheed Osupa – real name Akorede Babatunde Okunola – is one of the Eyo Ologede Family.
