The Ogun State Government has reconstituted the Awujale Interregnum Administrative Council (AIAC) to oversee the administrative and traditional affairs of Ijebuland, pending the selection and coronation of a new Awujale.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat, announced the Olisa of Ijebu-Ode, Chief Rasheed Adesanya, as Chairman, while Chief Chris Okunowo serves as Secretary.

Other appointed members of the five-man council include Prof. Jide Ajayi (Jagun Aso), Chief Stephen O. Bakare (Babalaje), and Chief Alade Shote (Otun Balogun).

The reconstitution follows the reported withdrawal of certain members from the council originally established in August 2025, amid disagreements that led to the emergence of a parallel group styled as Adele Oba Awujale.

Dismissing the rival group, Hamzat affirmed that the Adele Oba Awujale lacks legal and customary backing under the Awujale Chieftaincy Declaration and the state’s Obas and Chiefs Law. He added that the pre-independence 1957 Chiefs Law cited by the breakaway faction is obsolete and inapplicable in Ogun State.

Hamzat also cited a subsisting Ogun State High Court consent judgment (HCJ/180/2025), which affirmed the AIAC’s legality and established that the council’s authority takes precedence over individual traditional offices during the transition.

Warning the public against transacting with the breakaway members, the commissioner maintained that individual resignations do not invalidate the council, urging all stakeholders to respect the law and preserve peace across Ijebuland.
