Ogun East: Why Abiodun Is Positioned To Take APC Senatorial Ticket From Daniel — Insiders

Party sources say the battle may be decided less by popularity

Insiders say Governor Dapo Abiodun holds a strategic advantage over Senator Gbenga Daniel in the race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial ticket in Ogun East ahead of 2027.

This is despite the perception that Daniel, the incumbent Senator, is a more grounded politician with deeper grassroots structure.

Party sources say the battle may be decided less by popularity and more by control of party machinery and influence within the APC.

Abiodun, a two-term Governor nearing the end of his tenure, is said to have a firm grip on the Ogun APC structure — a major factor in any primary contest.

He is also believed to enjoy the backing of former Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, a key party powerbroker with strong influence around President Bola Tinubu.

“Abiodun’s loyalists dominate the state chapter that will play a crucial role in determining the candidate,” a source said, adding “Even if it is a direct primary, state leadership still controls vital party structures. Daniel faces a disadvantage there.”

Sources also say that although Daniel may have a closer personal relationship with Tinubu, Abiodun’s alliance with Osoba could neutralize that edge.

“If the President’s influence matters, Osoba strengthens Abiodun’s case. If it comes down to party primary, Abiodun’s control of Ogun APC gives him the upper hand,” another insider said.

Abiodun’s camp is further encouraged by Tinubu’s reported refusal to back automatic return tickets for federal lawmakers — a move seen as weakening incumbents like Daniel.

Keen followers of tye episode say Ogun East has shaped into a high-stakes battle between two former Governors — one seeking a second Senate term, the other plotting his next political move.
