It remains the talk of the town—an extraordinary act of reward for loyalty and excellence.

In a single night, Abdul Samad Rabiu, founder and chairman of top-performing conglomerate BUA Group, gave out a staggering ₦30 billion in cash gifts to 510 employees, outside their official entitlements.

A Night That Rewrote Corporate Gratitude

On December 13, 2025, the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, became the stage for what many now describe as one of the most unprecedented acts of corporate appreciation in Nigeria’s history.

The evening opened with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., where long-serving and outstanding staff received plaques and certificates recognising decades of commitment. Traditional music flowed through the gallery, performers drawing from Nigeria’s diverse cultural rhythms as staff and guests mingled freely over drinks and small chops.

The atmosphere was celebratory—but few could have predicted what would follow.

Precision, Order and a Culture of Safety

By 7:00 p.m., the main hall opened seamlessly. Veiled ushers, quietly guided by behind-the-scenes coordinators, ensured smooth seating. Before any formal remarks, guests were briefed on health and safety protocols, including a visual walkthrough of the venue’s floor plan.

It was a subtle reminder that excellence at BUA is not accidental—it is operational.

An Uncommon Entrance, A Family Statement

Chairman Abdul Samad Rabiu made a rare public appearance with members of his family. His children—Khadija, Kiki, Khalifa and Janet—were present, exchanging pleasantries with staff and guests.

The arrival of the founder of the ASR Africa Initiative, which commits $1 billion annually to sustainable solutions in health, education, mentorship and social development across Africa, formally set the tone for the evening.

Before speeches or stage appearances, Rabiu moved around the hall, greeting employees personally—an understated gesture that quietly reinforced the theme of family.

When Industry Titans Showed Up

Fellow billionaire Aliko Dangote arrived early and stayed throughout the event, an unmistakable show of solidarity. The moment echoed Rabiu’s support during the launch of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, which he attended and publicly amplified. Dangote was given special recognition during the ceremony.

Also present were Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, Alhaji Umaru Kwairanga, Minister of Finance (State), Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite and leading figures from banking, manufacturing and commerce.

Leadership Without Distance

Throughout the night, Yusuf Binji, Managing Director of BUA Cement, stood out for his accessibility. Despite his authority, he remained approachable, engaging warmly with staff and guests alike. Attending with his wife, he ensured no interaction felt rushed—an embodiment of leadership grounded in respect.

The Moment the Hall Held Its Breath

Emotion reached its peak as beneficiaries were announced.

When Usman Tanko, a staff member of over 40 years, was named a ₦500 million recipient, he raised his hands in prayer and danced his way forward, gratitude written across his face.

Moments later, the hall fell silent as Debo Agbonyin, a 37-year veteran and ₦1 billion beneficiary, broke down in tears. Invited to speak on behalf of the awardees, emotion overwhelmed him. Words failed—but the message was unmistakable.

The Scale Of The Gesture

Out of the 510 beneficiaries, only 41 staff members were called on stage to physically receive cheques, due to time constraints. They represented the highest award categories:

16 recipients – ₦100 million

9 recipients – ₦200 million

7 recipients – ₦250 million

3 recipients – ₦500 million

5 recipients – ₦1 billion

1 special award recipient – cash value undisclosed

The spontaneous cheers that followed each announcement revealed how tightly guarded the entire ₦30 billion initiative had been. Even some beneficiaries were visibly stunned—an indication the gesture was never leaked.

Quiet Power, No Pageantry

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, arrived without fanfare—no heavy security detail, no retinue of aides. The prince from Iperu blended seamlessly into the gathering, chatting freely with associates and friends.

Beneficiaries not in attendance were represented, while the remaining 469 recipients were scheduled to receive their cheques at their offices the following Monday.

“BUA Has Never Been Just a Business”

Taking the stage, Abdul Samad Rabiu delivered remarks that anchored the night’s meaning.

“The true strength of BUA,” he said, “is and will always be its people. For me, BUA has never been just a business; it has always been a family.”

He noted that BUA Foods is now the largest company by capitalisation on the Nigerian Exchange, while BUA Cement ranks among the top ten—milestones he credited to staff dedication.

Special Recognition and Living History

The night’s special award—whose cash value was not announced—went to Kabiru Rabiu – the group executive director, recognised for exceptional loyalty, leadership and long-standing contribution to the group’s stability.

Also unveiled was Debo Agbonyin as BUA’s first-ever employee, a living symbol of the company’s journey. Each mention of his name drew sustained applause.

Music, Culture and Celebration

Performances by Sir Shina Peters, Teni (Teniola Apata) and Alternate Sound transformed the hall into a moving celebration, spanning classic hits and contemporary anthems.

Staff attended in vibrant traditional attire, reflecting Nigeria’s diversity and the unity powering the BUA Group.

Chairman’s Promise Beyond N30b Gift

Despite the magnitude of the ₦30 billion giveaway, Chairman Rabiu ended with a forward-looking promise:

“As BUA grows, you will grow. As BUA advances, you will advance. As BUA becomes stronger, every member of this family will rise with it—because this legacy is yours as much as it is mine.”

He revealed that BUA is entering a new era of growth, marked by expanded capacity, new plants, advanced technologies and deeper footprints across key industries.

A Pattern, Not an Exception

This landmark gesture follows a consistent pattern. On July 1, 2021, Rabiu gifted employees nearly ₦2 billion worth of shares from his personal holdings, recognising their resilience during the pandemic.

At the 2025 BUA Night of Excellence, one message rang clear: At BUA, loyalty is not remembered quietly—it is rewarded boldly.
