Charles Oyelesi
The Police authority has revealed why the movement of Governor of Rivers State Nyesom Wike has been restricted as residents of Edo State decides the next Governor today September, 19, 2020.
Reacting to claims by Governor Wike who is in Edo state as the National Campaign Council Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the Edo gubernatorial election that the Inspector General of Police Adamu Abubakar deployed about 300 policemen to restrict his movement after he rebuffed the request to leave Edo State, the Force Police Relations Officer Frank Mba disclosed that he cannot confirm whether such a conversation took place.
‘’But without speaking directly to this incident, I can tell you that all our actions in Edo state are tailored towards protecting the overall National interests of our people, overall National interests of our people and protect the credibility of the election…We have said it repeatedly that we will not do anything that will give any candidate undue advantage or reduces the chances of any political party’’ Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police stated.
The police spokesperson asserted as a guest on a live commentary on television station AIT tagged ‘’ Edo Gubernatorial Election…Reports and Analysis’’.
Mba further revealed that the position of the police in the election is that ‘’ whoever you are, you should operate within the law. We are not a political party, we are in the business … we stay in police business’’
The Force Public Relations Officer, however, chipped in that questions should rather be asked why it is only Governor Wike that is an issue of alleged restriction of movements.
‘’Politicians are creative people, wonderful people’’ Mba stated tongue in cheek and continued ‘’…but we are police, the P in NPF stands for something..ours is to provide an enabling environment for the election in Edo state…the Inspector General of Police Abubakar Adamu came into his position with a lot of integrity at stake, a former at Interpol (International Police) in charge of a whole intelligence directorate, a former Vice President at Interpol..one thing I know is that he will not take actions that bring him into collision with the law of the land’’ Mba stated emphatically on the AIT program monitored by societynow.ng today, September 19, 2020
