How History Validates Why Your Favourite May Not Win BBNaija

Many of us have picked our favourite, joined the fanbase, defended them on X, argued over who is carrying the season and, somewhere along the line, we have convinced ourselves that there is absolutely no way our faves are going home, but if there is one thing Big Brother Naija history has taught us, it is that being a fan favourite is never a guarantee of making it to the finale.

During the 2017 See Gobe season, Bally was widely regarded as one of the housemates with a strong chance of reaching the final. His eviction came as a major surprise to viewers who expected him to go much further; he was evicted after polling 23% of the votes, the lowest among the four housemates up for eviction.

Then came Saskay in Shine Ya Eye. Saskay had built a noticeable following outside the house and was one of the season’s most talked about housemates. Still, on September 19, 2021, she and Yousef were evicted in a double eviction. This was the highlight of the eviction night, with many fans expressing shock over her exit from the show.

Ilebaye is another interesting case. Before she eventually became the winner of All Stars, Ilebaye’s first BBNaija journey in Level Up ended much earlier than many expected. Her bold personality had already made her one of the more talked-about housemates, but she was evicted early in the season. Fast-forward to All Stars, and she went on to win the entire show. Talk about a plot twist.

Then there was Whitemoney. After winning Shine Ya Eye, Whitemoney returned for All Stars with an established fanbase and the reputation of a former winner. Naturally, many viewers expected him to have a long run. Instead, his journey ended before the finale, and one that left fans talking

Remember Maria? The Shine Ya Eye housemate who became one of the season’s biggest personalities. Between her strong personality, strategic gameplay, and the drama surrounding her, Maria was rarely out of the conversation. She had also built a significant fanbase, which made her eviction a surprise to viewers who expected her to go much further.

So, before you say “……” is winning this season”, remember being popular does not guarantee a spot in the finale. Your favourite may have the biggest fanbase today, but Biggie’s house has a way of surprising everyone.
