Viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to even greater sporting variety, with some thrilling action coming their way on ESPN and ESPN 2 from Friday 18 to Thursday 24 December 2020.

ESPN

ESPN is your home of football through this week, starting with an EFL League One clash between Hull City and Portsmouth on the evening of Friday 18 December (06:25 PM LIVE on ESPN).

Hull manager Grant McCann has praised his team’s spirit and togetherness after recent positive results pushed them to the head of the table. “We’ve got a strong squad, but the most pleasing thing of all this is the togetherness within the group,” explained the Tigers boss.

“They all get on. The spirit’s high and they all take real accountability for everything that goes wrong – in and around the training ground and on the pitch. That’s brilliant to have as a manager and long may it continue. They’re a good group – a tight-knit group – and they just want to do well.”

The week will also feature action from the Turkish Super Lig – Fenerbahce v Yeni Malatyaspor on Saturday 19 December (05:55 PM LIVE on ESPN) – as well as plenty of Dutch football from the Eredivisie, including ADO Den Haag hosting Ajax on Sunday 20 December (02:20 PM LIVE on ESPN) and Feyenoord taking on Heerenveen on Wednesday 23 December (08:50 PM LIVE on ESPN).

Feyenoord’s veteran manager Dick Advocaat has confirmed that this season will be his last, with the 73-year-old set to retire once the 2020-21 campaign is complete. “I will do everything I can, but after that, it has been good. I know I’ve said that before. But this time you can keep me to it: the coming months will really be my last as a club trainer. After a long and wonderful career, Feyenoord is a great club to close with. Hopefully – and I believe in that – we will be able to show good things before that.”

Fans of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Football League (NFL) can get their fill of action with the nightly magazine shows The Jump (09:00 PM LIVE on ESPN) and NFL Live (10:00 PM LIVE on ESPN) on Thursday 24 December.

ESPN 2

The first live action on ESPN2 arrives early on the morning of Friday 18 December, as the Las Vegas Raiders take on the Los Angeles Chargers in a National Football League (NFL) clash at Allegiant Stadium (03:15 AM LIVE on ESPN 2).

The Chargers’ defensive end Joey Bosa has been making waves with his performances in the midst of a struggling season for the Los Angeles team, and coach Anthony Lynn has nothing but praise for the 25-year-old.

“He works hard,” Lynn said. “Joey was playing early on with two to three different injuries we didn’t even know about. He was playing through it, wants to be out there with his teammates and help us win. I love how professional he is; he gets his body right and gets back out there. He makes a difference.”

The American football action continues on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 December with a trio of NCAA College matches (06:00 PM, 09:30 PM and 02:30 AM LIVE on ESPN 2) showcasing the future stars of the NFL.

Sunday 20 December sees the Scottish Premiership take centre stage with a clash between Kilmarnock and Aberdeen (12:55 PM LIVE on ESPN 2). Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was left frustrated by a recent draw with St Mirren, but praised his side’s efforts nonetheless.

“I felt the commitment and the spirit of the team was good, I felt we did as much attacking in the first ten minutes as we managed in the whole first half last week and we scored a very good goal from our point of view,” said the Dons boss. “We were comfortable defensively, we made them shoot from distance and cross from deep and even with ten men, we handled them well. There was a good attitude from the boys.”

NFL takes over again early in the working week with the Dallas Cowboys v San Francisco 49ers (03:15 AM LIVE on ESPN 2) and Cincinnati Bengals v Pittsburgh Steelers (03:15 AM LIVE on ESPN 2) on the mornings of Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December respectively.
