highlights the tournament’s potential
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reinforced the growing excitement around the South West Games 2025, throwing his full weight behind the regional sporting event. His endorsement highlights the tournament’s potential to drive sports development, foster unity, and promote economic empowerment across the South West.
Sanwo-Olu, a passionate advocate for grassroots sports, emphasized that the South West Games 2025 would serve as a launchpad for emerging talents while strengthening community ties. “For decades, the South West has been a hub of sporting excellence, and this event will provide a structured avenue to nurture the next generation of champions,” he stated. “Beyond the thrill of competition, it fosters discipline, teamwork, and a shared identity among our people.”

Scheduled to take place from March 26 to 28, 2025, the tournament will bring together over 1,200 athletes and 120 officials, making it one of the largest sporting events in the region’s history. A key feature of the games is the Bola Ahmed Tinubu South West Alliance Games (BATSWAG), designed to identify and develop young athletes under 18. Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence in its ability to reinforce shared values, ambition, and the untapped potential of the youth.
Corroborating the governor’s stance, Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), described the tournament as a unique platform to discover, showcase, and nurture talent. “Lagos is proud to host this landmark sports fiesta, and the LSSC has fully committed its resources to ensuring its success,” he stated.
Fatodu commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for embracing the initiative and assured that no stone would be left unturned in making the event a monumental success. Beyond the sporting spectacle, he highlighted the tournament’s economic benefits, urging corporate bodies and stakeholders to support the initiative. “Sports have evolved beyond a pastime; they now serve as a major industry capable of creating jobs, driving investments, and fostering economic growth,” he noted.

Sanwo-Olu’s backing adds to a growing coalition of influential figures and institutions rallying behind the South West Games 2025. Other notable supporters include Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba (CFR). Traditional rulers such as the Ooni of Ife, HRM Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and sports icons like Segun Odegbami (MON) and former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick have also pledged their support, further reinforcing the tournament’s significance.
The corporate world has also demonstrated strong interest in the tournament, with financial institutions like First Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA), alongside energy giant Aiteo, stepping in as major sponsors. Other key stakeholders who have expressed their commitment to the event include Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab and Chief Folly Coker, Director General of the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA).

Dr. Lanre Alfred, President of the Organizing Committee, described Sanwo-Olu’s endorsement as a defining moment for the South West Games. “Aside from being the chief host, having a leader of his stature champion this initiative elevates its significance,” he remarked. “The South West Games is not just about medals; it is about creating opportunities, forging partnerships, and building a sustainable sports ecosystem for the region.”
With excitement building and preparations in full swing, the South West Games 2025 promises to usher in a new era of sporting excellence, economic vibrancy, and regional unity. The resounding message from all quarters is clear: with sustained investment and collaboration, the future of Nigerian sports is brighter than ever.
