The government of Ogun State has gone after peddlers of fake news with intent to blackmail and sow discord in its rank.

The individuals operating under the cloak of anonymity initiated a series of smear campaigns against Governor Dapo Abiodun and top administrators in his government.

The latest mudslinging which spurred the government to act is described as “a fabricated falsehood and poorly choreographed bunch of lies attacking the image of senior officials of Ogun State using a cloned platform of reputable news website Premiumtimes”.

Societynow.ng gathered that the integrity of an official of Ogun State was impugned in a widely circulated Whatsapp message with a link to a premiumtimes.com, a cloned website that returned ‘This site can’t be reached’.

Sources confirmed that Editors from the reputable news website PremiumTimes have disclaimed the story.

Societynow.ng learned this development has forced the government of Ogun state to take steps at putting the matter to bed once and for all by going after the perpetrators.

Insiders disclosed that the government has decided to leave no stone unturned in unmasking the identity of those behind the attack and getting them prosecuted.

Interestingly, the attacks come at a time the governor is exhibiting great synergy with his team- getting accolades including recognition from NCDC ( Nigeria Centre for Disease Control ) – in protecting the lives of the people of Ogun State in the raging fight against Covid-19.

” The general belief is that the plot of the purveyors of falsehood is to cause a crisis between Gov Abiodun and his aides or plant a seed of discord amongst the government officials in order to disorganize a solid team, which is why the government has decided to go after them with the full weight of the law” a source pointed out.
