Why Gbenga Daniel’s Mother-in-Law’s Funeral Is Creating Political Buzz In Ogun
a rare meeting point for leading figures
The funeral of the late Mrs. Sabainah Ibironke Opawole (née Osoba), mother of Yeye Olufunke Daniel, wife of former Ogun State Governor and Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, on Friday became the subject of political conversation across Ogun State as it brought together some of the state’s most influential political figures in a rare display of unity ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The funeral service, held at Ibara Baptist Church, Abeokuta, attracted Governor Dapo Abiodun, Senator Gbenga Daniel, Senator Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi), and Peoples Democratic Party governorship hopeful, Oladipupo Adebutu, among other dignitaries.

Beyond the solemnity of the occasion, attention shifted to the interactions among the political leaders, particularly a public gesture by Adebutu, who, after delivering a brief tribute, walked to Governor Abiodun and embraced him before the congregation.
He also crossed over to greet Senator Adeola, exchanging handshakes and pleasantries before acknowledging other dignitaries at the service.
The gestures drew applause from worshippers and guests, with many interpreting them as a demonstration of political maturity despite the intense rivalry expected to shape the race for the Ogun Government House in 2027.
The gathering also reinforced Senator Daniel’s reputation as one of the few political figures in Ogun capable of bringing together leaders across party lines.

Political observers noted that the presence of Governor Abiodun, Adebutu and Adeola at the family event reflected Daniel’s longstanding relationships that cut across political divides.
The event revived memories of March 2020 when Governor Abiodun and former Governor Ibikunle Amosun publicly reunited at the wedding of Daniel’s son in Lagos after months of political differences.
For many attendees, Friday’s ceremony was more than a funeral. It became a rare meeting point for leading figures from the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party, underscoring the enduring personal relationships that continue to coexist with political competition in Ogun State.
