has now evolved into a symbolic political clash between supporters

The build-up to the 2026 Osun governorship election is beginning to take a dramatic new shape, with supporters of the major political camps turning social media and street conversations into an Arsenal-themed political battlefield built around two dominant slogans — “Imole” and “Ambo.”

What started as playful football banter among politically active youths has now evolved into a symbolic political clash between supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke and loyalists of the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as “AMBO.”

The political atmosphere became even more charged following Adeleke’s decision to contest the 2026 governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party after exiting the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the platform that brought him to power in 2022.

Sources within the governor’s camp said the move was designed to prevent possible legal and electoral complications that could arise from internal disputes and prolonged crises within the PDP ahead of the election season.

Across X, Facebook, WhatsApp groups and local political gatherings, supporters now deploy Arsenal-style rivalry language to market their preferred camps, with “Imole” backers projecting continuity and grassroots dominance, while “Ambo” supporters insist the APC is preparing a strong comeback in Osun.

The rivalry has become especially popular among younger voters, many of whom now compare the unfolding political atmosphere to the passionate loyalty seen among Arsenal football fans.

Political slogans are increasingly being turned into chants, memes and match-day style arguments, giving the early stages of the Osun 2026 race an entertainment flavour rarely seen this early in the political cycle.

Supporters of Governor Adeleke argue that the “Imole” movement still enjoys massive grassroots appeal across the state due to the administration’s populist style and strong public visibility.

On the other hand, APC loyalists promoting the “Ambo” identity say Bola Oyebamiji represents a fresh political direction capable of repositioning the opposition ahead of the election.

Though formal campaigns are yet to begin, the growing online battle is already drawing attention within political circles, with analysts describing it as an early indication that Osun may witness one of the most media-driven governorship contests in recent history.

Observers say the use of football culture and Arsenal-themed rivalry reflects how political communication is rapidly changing among younger Nigerians, especially in Southwest states where social media influence continues to shape public perception and voter engagement.

Although “Imole versus Ambo” conversation may still be largely symbolic, but across Osun, the chants are growing louder, the camps are becoming more visible, and the road to 2026 is already beginning to look like a political derby.
