In a historic convergence of sports, leadership, and corporate influence, the highly anticipated South West Games 2025 has officially kicked off in Lagos.
Running from March 26 to 28, 2025, the premier sporting event has drawn the backing of some of Nigeria’s most influential figures, signaling a new era of grassroots sports development and economic revitalization in the region.

The tournament, which boasts over 1,200 athletes and 120 officials across multiple sporting disciplines, has received the endorsement of key political leaders, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, and Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila. Former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba (CFR), the Ooni of Ife, HRM Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, football legend Segun Odegbami (MON), and former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick are also among the dignitaries lending their support.

With its grand opening at Onikan Stadium, the South West Games 2025 is expected to not only redefine regional sports but also serve as a catalyst for economic and social transformation.
The event has attracted sponsorship from corporate giants such as First Bank, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and AITEO, whose investments underscore the growing synergy between sports and commerce in Nigeria.
Speaking at the inauguration, President of the Organizing Committee, Akogun Olanrewaju Alfred, emphasized the tournament’s significance in unlocking new opportunities for young athletes and businesses alike.

“With such formidable personalities backing this initiative, the South West Games 2025 is positioned to redefine regional sports development. This isn’t just about competition—it’s about creating a thriving ecosystem for sports, boosting investments, and harnessing the boundless potential of young Nigerian athletes,” Alfred stated.
A major highlight of the tournament is the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Southwest Alliance Games (BATSWAG), a sub-event dedicated to nurturing young talents under the age of 18. Designed as a grassroots development initiative, BATSWAG has been hailed as a crucial step toward discovering and refining future national and international sports stars.

Beyond athletics, the tournament is expected to boost tourism, stimulate commerce, and generate employment opportunities. With thousands of spectators, sports enthusiasts, and visitors pouring into Lagos, local businesses, hospitality services, and service industries stand to benefit immensely.
As the competition unfolds, excitement is at an all-time high, with expectations that the South West Games 2025 will leave a lasting legacy. More than just a sporting event, it is a movement—a celebration of resilience, unity, and the boundless power of sports as a tool for national transformation.
