Portugal Vs Spain, How To Get The Best Of FIFA International Friendlies

Published

on

It is time for some international football action and viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to more football action from tomorrow Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 October, with no less than 10 international friendlies.

One of the top international friendlies on Wednesday 7 October is the Iberian derby between Portugal and Spain at Estadio Jose Alvalade. One of the major narratives surrounding this match is the great form of Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, whose blistering start to the 2020-21 season has defied his advancing years – with the Juventus star recently insisting that he wants to keep playing into his 40s.

“Cristiano is ready to play until he’s 40, but he doesn’t know if it will happen,” said Portugal national team manager Fernando Santos. “At some point he may feel that he no longer has the same conditions. He’s not a player who will lower his level, when he feels like he can’t be Ronaldo, he won’t.”

Wednesday also features European heavyweights Germany, Italy, Netherlands and France facing Turkey, Moldova, Mexico and Ukraine respectively. The Netherlands v Mexico match will be particularly interesting, as it represents the start of Frank de Boer’s tenure in charge of the ‘Oranje’, with the former Ajax legend replacing Ronald Koeman (who has taken over at Spanish giants Barcelona).

Thursday 8 October is headlined by a British derby between England and Wales. For the ‘Three Lions’, Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin will be hoping to make a major impact on his first call-up to Gareth Southgate’s team, having enjoyed a goal-laden start to the campaign with the Toffees.

“He is a complete striker. It is not easy to find a striker with these characteristics,” said Calvert-Lewin’s club manager Carlo Ancelotti. “He has a lot of energy, is really fast. I am really pleased he is doing well and scoring goals because at the end a striker is judged on the goals he scores. It’s a great achievement for him [the England call-up]. I hope it will not be the last. It depends on him. He is doing really well. He needs to have consistency.”
