The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has moved swiftly to debunk a viral social media video claiming that the Agency has secretly banned Amoxicillin in Nigeria.

The claim, which has sparked confusion and concern among the public, has been confirmed by NAFDAC as entirely false.

In a statement released yesterday, NAFDAC reassured Nigerians, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders that there is no blanket ban on the commonly used antibiotic.

While the Agency routinely monitors medicines in circulation and issues targeted safety alerts or recalls for substandard or affected batches, Amoxicillin remains legally available in the country.

“NAFDAC has not banned Amoxicillin. The video circulating online is misinformation. We urge the public to rely only on verified updates from NAFDAC’s official channels,” a spokesperson for the Agency stated.

Health experts have also weighed in, warning against panic buying or hoarding of medicines based on unverified claims.

Dr. Nkechi Okafor, a pharmacologist, said, “Spreading false information about essential medicines can disrupt treatment and cause unnecessary anxiety. Always consult your pharmacist or doctor before making health decisions.”

The Agency further called on Nigerians to remain vigilant against fake news on social media, noting that viral posts often exaggerate or misrepresent routine drug safety measures. NAFDAC reminded the public that official updates on medicine safety are only valid when published on its website or verified social media handles.

As the circulation of health misinformation grows, NAFDAC emphasized that the public should disregard all unverified claims and report suspicious posts to official authorities.
