The perceived powerful Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has been removed from office.

Obasa, who has been Speaker since June 8, 2015, was ousted from his position on Monday, June 13, 2025.

The development occurred without a whimper of protest from the supposedly formidable statewide structure of the reportedly influential politician, who has won back-to-back elections to the Lagos State Assembly since 2007.

A former councilor at Agege Local Government, Obasa’s career as a state legislator began in 2007, representing Agege Constituency 1. He won re-election in 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023. He had held the position of Speaker since 2015.

Speculations suggested that Obasa had amassed so much power and political influence over the years that he is seriously considered a contender for the next governor of Lagos State. However, his removal, without even a feeble protest from his supporters in the House of Assembly, tells another story.

“Obasa’s removal as Speaker emphasizes that those often labeled as the ‘owners of Lagos’ remain fully in charge of the decision-making process. Today’s sitting at the Lagos Assembly merely played out the motions of announcing a sealed fate,” insiders say.

Female lawmaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda has been elected as his replacement by the body of Lagos lawmakers.

This development comes amid a reported face-off with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
