President Bola Tinubu has said Nigerians will hear competing proposals on how to reduce the cost of living as the 2027 political season gathers momentum, insisting that his responsibility is to deliver tangible relief while protecting future generations from unsustainable financial burdens.

Tinubu, in a statement highlighting reported reductions in transport fares across the country, said the sustainability and funding of political promises should be key considerations in assessing proposals aimed at easing economic hardship.

“As the political season gathers momentum, Nigerians will hear competing proposals to reduce the cost of living. The important questions are how each proposal will be funded, delivered and sustained,” he said.

The president cautioned against policies that merely postpone financial obligations rather than address their underlying costs.

“A deferred bill is still a bill,” he said, adding that Nigerians, including future generations, might eventually bear the burden of promises dependent on deferred costs.

Tinubu cited reported reductions in transport fares in Abuja, Enugu and Borno as examples of the benefits of investments in compressed natural gas (CNG), electric and hybrid transportation.

The Nigerian leader said , fares in Abuja had dropped from ₦1,500 to ₦500, while those in Enugu had fallen from ₦4,000 to ₦1,600. He also cited fares as low as ₦50 in Borno.

He said the savings could leave households with more money for essential needs, including food and school fees, amid rising living costs.

“These savings mean more money for food, school fees and other household needs,” the president added.

He added that the government was expanding access to affordable transportation while implementing measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel costs.

Tinubu said his administration’s responsibility was to ensure that Nigerians experienced immediate economic relief without compromising the interests of future generations.

“My responsibility is to deliver relief Nigerians can feel today while protecting our children’s future,” he asserted.
